Fire Dance ~ prolouge

That day. I remember nothing of that day but what pained me. It was chilly that night. I remember that too. That must be a strange thing to remember, that it was cold. I was crying. The pain was overwhelming. Everything in my world lost it’s meaning that day; my heart froze. I knew I would never love again…

I looked down the road. “Well, five miles to go,” I muttered. I touched the pommel of my broadsword that was strapped to my back. My name is Tori, I am a girl. My origin was the fire nation, but I hate them. I’m a fire bender, actually I surpassed the fire masters when I was ten.I never mastered firebending, but it doesn’t matter. I don’t fire bend anymore.Now the road was my nation. I had a reason for stopping, and I’ll tell you, but not now.

My eyes are pretty large and a deep green, that must be strange seeing as I am originally from the fire nation, but it never bothers me, so…My body is taller than you’d think they would for my age and i am very slim because living on the road stole all my youthful baby-fat from my body. I have long black hair that I chop off with my broad sword when it gets too annoying. I generally wear a long black cloak that was originally my father’s, I also wear a red tunic with black leggings that were my mother’s. I’m only fourteen, but I’m strong.

I heard some noise behind me and glanced back to see something that made me scowl. “Fire nation,” I growled under my breath. I didn’t shrink to the side of the road like most people do, but stayed straight on my path. I had been seeing more and more of these groups and usually I would shrink back, but not now.

They came close to me and the general stopped me. “Excuse me, miss. What nation are you from? You are wearing no signs so you can imagine my curiosity.”

“None,” I replied. “I live for no nation.”

He blinked. “Impudent girl, you must belong to one!”

“No, I abandoned them all. I am not involved with them nor their wars.” I replied pointedly.

“As long as you are on this land you will be part of the war.” He replied harshly.

“So be it. Then I’ll fight, but not for a nation, for myself. My life belongs to no one. Enemies that have nothing to lose are always the most difficult to defeat and I am one. If you would like me as an enemy, by all means attack, if not please leave me alone.”

“One girl against this many fire nation soldiers?” he questioned. “The fire lord may want to use you in the army.”

“The fire lord may want me, but not for that. He wished me for his family. An adopted daughter.”

He hesitated. “Then…if you are favored by the fire lord…I suppose I will leave you for now. I will report I found you to the fire lord and if he wishes, I will find you and take you back to him, give me your name.”

“It is polite to give your own name first.

“I am General Tai.”

“Tori Saito.”
